The Email That Starts Every Reset Conversation
About once a month, usually on a Tuesday morning, I get an email with the subject line: "how do you reset a phone?"
I'm the office administrator for a 40-person telecom contractor. I manage field equipment purchasing—roughly $300,000 a year spread across a dozen vendors. I report to operations and finance. I don't climb poles or splice fiber. But when field gear stops behaving, the requests land in my inbox.
For the longest time, I treated "how do you reset a phone?" as a simple support question. Maybe the device is a backup phone. Maybe it's a handheld tester. The request usually came in two variations: "how do you reset a phone?" or "do I need to clear phone memory before sending it back?"

Why a Reset Never Solved Anything

I even demonstrated the hard reset on the old 3310. The questions kept coming, just slightly different: "It still won't boot." "The trace looks wrong." "Can you clear phone data from here?"
That's when I realized I had the problem backward.
The device wasn't the problem. What I mean is: resetting the tool didn't change the fact that two crews were using different testers with different settings. A reset wouldn't line up their OTDR pulses. It wouldn't make the loss numbers match. And it definitely couldn't fix a skipped reference calibration.
Everything I'd read about precision test gear said to trust the instrument and fix the process. The conventional wisdom for a glitchy laptop is "reboot first." In practice, that works for laptops. In fiber testing, it just delays the real conversation.
A reset is also a way of resetting accountability. It says "the device is broken" instead of "our process is inconsistent." That's not fair to the techs—they were using the tools they had. But it's why the same question kept showing up with different devices.
The Real Issue: No Standard Test Kit
When I mapped every reset request to a project, a pattern appeared. The calls came from crews with mixed equipment. One truck had an EXFO Max 715B and knew how to upload results. Another truck had an older tester, a different launch cable, and a spreadsheet nobody had updated since 2022.
The numbers didn't agree, so the crew blamed the tool. But the tool wasn't broken. The process was broken.
We didn't have a formal equipment refresh process. No approved model list. No standard setting for OTDR wavelength, pulse width, or averaging time. No shared file format. The techs were all competent—they just didn't have a common way of working.
I knew we should have standardized on one tester family before the project started. But I thought "what are the odds a mismatch shows up now?" The odds caught up with me on a Friday afternoon, when two techs came back with different pass/fail results for the same fiber span.
We didn't have a process for that either. The third time this happened, I finally created a verification checklist. Should have done it after the first time.
The Cost of Treating It as a Phone Problem
Let me put the cost in terms an office admin can defend in a budget meeting: hours, rework, and trust.
From May to July 2024, we logged 11 device-support calls. If I remember correctly, each one averaged about 45 minutes of a senior tech's time. That's almost eight hours of pulling someone off billable work to say "press and hold, then confirm reset." (This was before we changed the process.)
Then came the expensive one. A GC rejected our OTDR reports because two crews used different settings on the same fiber. The numbers were close, but not close enough for the engineer signing off. We had to re-test four spans on a Saturday. Overtime, truck rolls, and a very apologetic email from me to the project manager. That one weekend cost around $2,800, maybe $3,000, give or take the change order we almost lost. I'm not counting the stress. (Mental note: don't use the phrase "under control" until the final report is signed.)
There was a quieter cost too. The techs stopped telling me when something was off. Instead of asking for help, they'd reset the unit themselves and move on, hoping the issue didn't follow them. That's worse, because a hidden problem is harder to trace than a noisy one.
What Actually Helped (And It Wasn't Another Reset Guide)
We didn't need a better FAQ. We needed a base configuration for every crew.
- For loss testing in the field: the EXFO Max 715B. It's simple enough that a crew can run a test without calling the office.
- For troubleshooting and OTDR traces: the EXFO FTB-1 OTDR. One platform, one file format, one way to compare results.
- For talking over dark fiber: the ClearPhone optical talk set. It beats explaining OTDR measurements over a cell phone in a dead zone.
We also kept the old Nokia 3310s in the trucks as emergency spares, because they're practically immortal. If a crew needs a backup phone, the 3310 will do. It just won't do the testing.
As of January 2025, this is the baseline we buy against. New hires get a 30-minute run-through of the test kit and the reset sheet. The sheet still includes the hard reset procedure—because yes, sometimes you genuinely need to clear phone memory. But the next time someone asks "how do you reset a phone?", I send them the sheet and the approved equipment list.
The reset requests dropped by around 80 percent, maybe 85. More importantly, the rework calls stopped. We still have a 3310 or two floating around, but they're now backup communication devices, not defaults.
The lesson I had to learn the hard way: when the same reset question shows up over and over, it's not a phone problem. It's a tool-language problem. You can't factory-reset your way out of inconsistent test equipment.
