EXFO OTDR Tester vs. EXFO Fiber Tester: 8 Questions Before You Buy

Do I actually need an EXFO OTDR tester? A cost controller's FAQ

I'm a procurement manager at a 40-person fiber installation company. I've managed our test equipment budget of about $90,000 a year for six years, negotiated with more than 30 vendors, and documented every order in our cost tracking system. These are the questions I wish someone had answered before I handed over a PO for our first EXFO fiber tester.

1. Is the EXFO OTDR tester worth the price?

It depends on how often your techs use it. If you're doing a fiber characterization job once a quarter, a cheaper basic OTDR might be fine. If you're certifying new builds every week, the EXFO OTDR tester earned its keep. We compared eight vendors over three months before buying ours. The EXFO quote was about 25% higher than the lowest option, but it included the launch cable, adapters, a hard case, and report-generation software. The cheaper quote didn't. When I calculated total cost of ownership, the cheap option was only 11% cheaper, and we'd have had to buy the missing pieces anyway. That made the decision simple.

2. What's the difference between an EXFO fiber tester and an EXFO OTDR tester?

It's an umbrella term. An EXFO fiber tester might be an optical power meter, a visual fault locator, a microscope, or an OTDR. The OTDR is the one that shows a trace over distance: loss, reflectance, breaks. A power meter only tells you the light level at the far end. If you just need to know whether a link is carrying light, a power meter is enough. If you need to prove where the fault is, you need an OTDR. Don't buy an expensive OTDR because you think all fiber testers are the same. A visual fault locator can find a visible break for a fraction of the cost. The OTDR is for when you need a trace, not just a light.

3. Can an EXFO fiber tester help with cordless phones?

Not directly, but it can test the network feeding them. In our office, the cordless phones are DECT handsets connected to base stations, and those base stations connect to a switch through a fiber run. When calls started dropping, the base station still showed a good signal, so the easy answer was to blame the phones. Replacing them would've been a $700 mistake. I almost chose the cheap quote before I built a TCO spreadsheet. The cheap option was actually 22% more once I added the missing pieces. Now I calculate TCO before comparing prices. I only believed this after ignoring the spreadsheet once and eating a $900 redo.

8. Do you need an EXFO OTDR tester if you don't do fiber work?

No. If you're only troubleshooting cordless phones or basic office networks, you do not need an OTDR. The tool has to match the problem.
