An uncalibrated OTDR wastes your money. Period.
I learned this the hard way. For my first two years in fiber testing (starting in 2017), I treated calibration like a paperwork requirement. A stamp on a certificate. Something the lab did, and I ignored. Then in September 2022, a single uncalibrated EXFO MaxTester unit turned a routine 48-hour job into a week-long disaster involving re-tests, a blown deadline, and a very angry client.
Here's the short version: A calibrated OTDR doesn't just give you accurate numbers. It gives you data you can trust not to get rejected. I've personally documented 14 significant mistakes related to calibration (or lack thereof), totaling roughly $12,000 in wasted budget and rework. Now I maintain our team's pre-deployment checklist. Calibration is step one. Not step three.
An informed customer asks better questions. I'd rather spend 10 minutes explaining why calibration matters than spend a week explaining why a project failed.
What I thought I knew (and what reality taught me)
The conventional wisdom I ignored
Everything I'd read about OTDRs said calibration drifts over time due to laser aging, connector wear, and temperature cycles. The manufacturer's recommendation is annual calibration. I thought: "That's for the lab guys. My meter works fine. I checked it on a known good fiber last month."
In practice, I found the opposite. A subtle drift—just 0.05 dB on a single event—can be the difference between passing a splice acceptance test and failing it. In a 12-splice link, that's a potential 0.6 dB of phantom loss you're explaining away. Good luck justifying that to a customer who sees their own numbers.
The case that broke my confidence
In Q1 2024, I submitted test results from an EXFO FTB-200 (post-calibration cycle, circa March 2023) for a 48-fiber backbone acceptance. The client's network engineer ran his own verification set with a freshly calibrated unit (EXFO, different model). Every single one of my 48 traces showed an average 0.12 dB higher loss than his. Not a deal-breaker on one fiber, but on 48, with a required 0.2 dB margin? Reject. The entire report.
That mistake cost $890 in redo labor plus a 1-week schedule delay. Looking back, I should have cross-checked my unit against a known reference before leaving the shop. At the time, I thought: "It was calibrated 14 months ago. It's fine." It was not fine.
What a proper calibration actually covers—and why it matters
It's not just a sticker
When you send an EXFO unit (say, an OTDR, a PON power meter, or even a fiber microscope) for calibration, the process typically includes:
- Laser source power stability check—the most common drift culprit
- Wavelength accuracy verification (e.g., 1310 nm vs. 1550 nm windows)
- Distance scale linearity (critical for long-haul routes)
- Dead zone performance (connector quality matters)
The result is a trace you can defend. Without it, you're guessing.
When you can (and should) skip calibration
I'm not saying you need a fresh calibration for every job. That's overkill. Here's my rule of thumb based on trial and error:
- Skip it if the job is internal validation (e.g., checking your own fiber plant for a known fault). The absolute numbers matter less than the delta between traces.
- Don't skip it if the data goes to a customer, a carrier, or a regulatory body. They will verify. They will find the drift.
- Don't skip it if you're working on a single-mode long-haul link where every 0.1 dB counts.
One exception (unfortunately): If your unit is a few months out of cycle but you have a recent cross-check against a known good reference (like a lab-standard launch cable), you can probably get away with it. But don't make it a habit.
