The telecom part matters: EXFO doesn't build switches, routers, or mobile phones. It makes the equipment used by people who install and maintain fiber. When a service provider sends a technician to fix a PON outage, the handheld tester in their hand, or the gear at the central office, is often EXFO.

If there's a fiber, EXFO makes something that tests it. EXFO does not make general-purpose electrical multimeters. That's not a dig—it's a boundary that makes the company easier to trust.

2. What does 'EXFO QoE telecom' mean?

QoE stands for Quality of Experience. In telecom, QoS is about technical metrics: bandwidth, packet loss, latency. QoE is about what a subscriber actually feels: video freezing, web pages taking too long, calls that drop. A network can report full quality and still be drowning in QoE complaints.

A separate tool that confuses people is the visual fault locator. VFLs send a visible red laser into fiber and help you find a break or bend. A VFL is not a replacement for loss testing. 6. OTDR or optical power meter: Which one do you need first?

I went back and forth on this for a while when I built a test kit for a small access project. On paper, an optical power meter plus laser source is cheaper and covers most acceptance tests. My gut said an OTDR would give more insight into unknown splices, bad connectors, and bends.

In the end, I chose the OTDR. That was the right call for that network because the documentation was poor. If you already know the fiber plant and just need to prove loss, buy the power meter and source first. If you're troubleshooting something you don't understand, the OTDR will save you hours.

The honest answer is that a healthy network team ends up with both. OTDRs help you locate events and characterize a new link. Power meters and laser sources measure end-to-end loss per industry standards. If I'm triaging for a group starting from zero, I ask one question: are you installing new fiber or fixing existing fiber? New fiber—power meter. Existing fiber—OTDR.

7. Can you really get EXFO equipment delivered in an emergency?

This is where I live. In March 2024, a field crew called us at 10 in the morning because their OTDR had just died and they had an acceptance test that afternoon. Normal turnaround in our system was two days. We found a calibrated replacement, checked the connector type, and had it delivered by 1:30. It cost an extra $260 in rush courier fees, plus the rental cost. It was worth it.

From the outside, rush orders look like shipping faster. The reality is a different workflow: inventory check, calibration records, connector and wavelength compatibility, battery care, and packing that won't throw off a sensitive instrument.
