EXFO 945 vs MaxTester EXFO: A Buyer's FAQ for Fiber Networks

I'm the office administrator for a 28-person fiber installation company. I handle test equipment ordering—roughly $300,000 a year across 8 vendors. I'm not a fiber engineer. I'm the person who signs the PO and then hears about it if the tool doesn't work. If you're also the one who buys gear and has to explain it to operations and finance, this FAQ is for you.

Here's what I've learned about the EXFO MaxTester 945—the thing people search as 'exfo 945' or 'maxtester exfo.'

1. Is 'exfo 945' the same as 'maxtester exfo'?

Yes. In nearly every case, when someone searches 'maxtester exfo,' they mean the MaxTester 945. That's how EXFO markets the product. You'll also see it typed as 'exfo 945.' It's the same product family.

One note of caution: EXFO makes a lot of test products. The number 945 can appear in different contexts. Before you order, confirm the full model number on the quote. I've seen a MaxTester 945 listed as MT945 in one document and EXFO-945 in another. Same unit, but the part number on the PO should match the invoice exactly. Otherwise, finance will kick it back. That's a lesson I learned the hard way.

2. What does the EXFO MaxTester 945 actually do?

It tests fiber optic loss. You connect a light source to one end of a fiber, a power meter to the other end, and the MaxTester 945 measures how much light is lost. Then it compares the result to the pass/fail threshold you set. That's the core job.

It also helps you certify that a new fiber link is ready for the network it's supposed to carry. If you're installing single-mode or multimode fiber, the MaxTester 945 gives you a number instead of a guess.

What it is not: a voltage tester. It doesn't measure electrical current, and it won't tell you if a power outlet is live. Different tool, different trade. We carry voltage testers for our electricians and site surveys, but I never confuse the two.

According to EXFO's product documentation (exfo.com), the MaxTester 945 is an optical loss test set. That's the official description. I'll leave the spec sheets to the engineers.

3. Do we still need a voltage tester if we buy a MaxTester 945?

Yes. If your teams work near power, a voltage tester is not optional. The MaxTester 945 checks light in a fiber. A voltage tester checks voltage in a wire. They solve different problems.

In our 2024 vendor consolidation project, I asked the team to list the tools they actually carry on a fiber install. The list included the MaxTester 945, a basic voltage tester, a tone generator, and a label maker. Not one tool replaced another. I turned that list into our standard purchase list.

If you're buying test equipment for a network project, don't let anyone bundle a voltage tester into the same quote as if it's an accessory. It's a separate safety item. Ask for it as a separate line. That way, when finance asks why the total is higher, you can explain the difference.

And if you see a quote that includes a fancy network tester but no voltage tester, ask what's missing. That leads to my next question.

4. How do I compare EXFO 945 quotes without hidden cost surprises?

Ask what is NOT included before you ask what the price is. That sounds simple, but I've learned it the hard way.

In November 2023, I ordered a MaxTester 945 from a vendor who came in $700 lower. It looked great. Then the invoice arrived: no transport case, no adapter set, and no calibration certificate. The calibration certificate alone mattered because we get audited. I had to go back to finance and explain that the lower price didn't include what we needed. They weren't thrilled.

Now I compare quotes on a simple checklist:

If the quote doesn't list these, I ask for an itemized version. A vendor who lists all fees upfront—even if the total looks higher—usually costs less in the end. That's the transparency rule I buy by now.

5. Is the EXFO MaxTester 945 worth the price?

I won't say EXFO is the only good option. There are other testers out there. But I can tell you why we keep buying MaxTester 945 units.

In 2022, we bought a cheaper tester from a vendor we'd never used. It gave us inconsistent readings on a new fiber run. The techs didn't trust it. We had to rent a calibrated unit, send a crew back to the site, and re-certify the link. The total rework cost was about $1,800. The savings on the original purchase was $300. You do the math.

Since then, we've ordered maybe 12 EXFO units. Maybe 14, I'd have to check the system. Every one of them has worked out of the box. That consistency is the real value.

Is the MaxTester cheap? No. But for our work, an accurate reading is the whole point. A cheaper tool that makes you guess isn't cheaper. It's noise.

6. We use vSRX for networks. Do we still need EXFO test equipment?

Yes—unless your network has zero fiber and zero physical connections. Most aren't like that.

vSRX is a virtual network function from Juniper. We run vSRX instances in our lab to test firewall rules, routing policies, and security configurations. It's a great way to test software behavior without racking up hardware. But vSRX doesn't tell you whether the fiber on the 12th floor has a bad splice. That's what the MaxTester 945 is for.

Think of it as two layers:

If a network is down, you need both answers: is the config wrong, or is the fiber bad? Mixing them up wastes a lot of time.

I asked one of our engineers how he'd explain this to a client. He said:

vSRX is for the brain. EXFO is for the nerves.

That's the clearest explanation I've found.

7. What should I verify before I sign a PO?

Two things: the exact part number and the calibration date.

The part number determines what's in the box. An extra adapter set can be the difference between a tool that works on site and a tool that doesn't. Calibration date matters because your quality system may require a current certificate. A tester calibrated 14 months ago might be perfectly fine, but if your audit standard says 12 months, you've got a problem.

Looking back, I should have asked for these details on our first order. At the time, I assumed MaxTester 945 was one product with one configuration. It isn't. There are options. And those options change the price, the lead time, and the usability.

So my process now:

  1. Get the full part number from the quote.
  2. Check it against EXFO's official page or ask the vendor to confirm.
  3. Ask about calibration certificate. Is it included? Is it current?
  4. Ask about lead time. In stock can mean different things.

Do that before you sign. It takes ten minutes. It saves a month of headaches. That's it.
