Matching Test Equipment to Your Situation: An EXFO Buyer's Perspective

There's no single "best" EXFO device

When I first started managing equipment purchases for our network team, I assumed there was a clear winner. You know—the one OTDR or power meter that everyone should buy. I was wrong.

After five years and about $120k annually across test equipment vendors, here's what I've learned: the right EXFO tool depends entirely on your team's workflow. Not on specs alone, not on price, and certainly not on what your competitor is using.

Let me break this into the three most common scenarios I've seen—and helped navigate.

Scenario A: The large-scale deployment team

What you're dealing with

You're rolling out fiber to hundreds of premises per month. Your techs are in the field full-time, swapping between FTTH builds and metro backbone work. You need rugged devices that survive pickup trucks and rain, and you need them to do multiple jobs without returning to the shop.

What I'd recommend

For this crew, the EXFO MaxTester 715B is hard to beat. It's a handheld OTDR with PON power meter built in. One device, one rugged shell, and it handles both troubleshooting and acceptance testing.

Honestly, start simple. An EXFO PON power meter and a fiber microscope (like the EXFO FIP-400B) will cover 80% of what most small teams need. Add an OTDR only when you're building new spans or troubleshooting hard-to-reach faults.

I've never fully understood why some technicians buy a $10,000 OTDR when they spend 90% of their time cleaning connectors and checking power levels. My best guess is they assume they'll grow into it. In practice, they just carry an expensive, unused brick.

If you do need an OTDR, the MaxTester 715B is still a good fit—just know it's overkill if you're not doing distance-to-fault work regularly.

How to figure out which scenario you're in
